BRADENTON, Fla. (April 10, 2019) - Jesse Medrano's squeeze bunt single in the bottom of the tenth pushed across the winning run Wednesday as the Bradenton Marauders clipped the Charlotte Stone Crabs 2-1 in 10 innings at LECOM Park.
In a 1-1 game in the bottom of the tenth, Marauders (5-2) first baseman Lucas Tancas grounded out to third to push automatic runner Chris Sharpe to third base. With one out, the Stone Crabs (3-4) intentionally walked Michael Gretler to put runners at the corners. That's when Medrano laid down the bunt, scoring Sharpe to end the game.
Despite the loss, Charlotte got excellent pitching from Mikey York , Tommy Romero and Alex Valverde (1-1). York turned in two hitless before Romero surrendered one run on two hits over 4.1 innings while striking out five. Valverde covered three innings before allowing the game-winning bunt.
After both teams traded zeroes for five innings, the Stone Crabs got the scoring going in the sixth. After Zach Rutherford singled, Vidal Brujan was hit by a pitch. With two men on, Tanner Dodson lined a base hit to center to load the bases with nobody out. The next batter was Moises Gomez , who rolled a grounder to shortstop. The Marauders threw out Brujan at third as Rutherford scored to make it 1-0. Bradenton then induced an inning-ending double play.
The Marauders eventually tied the game on a Tancas RBI double to the left field corner in the seventh.
The Stone Crabs will look to earn a split of the four-game set at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Resly Linares (0-0, 3.00) makes the start for Charlotte against Oddy Nunez (0-0, 5.40) of Bradenton. Coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
