Trenton Thunder shortstop/second baseman Jorge Mateo has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of June 26th-July 2nd. The 22-year old batted .522 (12-for-23) with three triples, one home run, 10 RBIs, nine runs scored, two stolen bases, five walks, and a .913 slugging percentage in six games last week. Mateo, who is a native of Santo Domingo Oeste, Dominican Republic, made his Double-A debut for the Thunder on Tuesday and went 2-for-5 in a 10-4 win over Richmond. He went on to reach base multiple times in all six games he played in last week and had five multiple hit games, including going 4-for-4 with four RBIs in a rain-shortened 13-4, five-inning win at New Hampshire on Saturday. The 6'0", 190 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in runs scored (9), triples (3), and on-base percentage (.621) last week and tied for the league lead in RBIs (10). He also ranked among the weekly leaders in batting average (.522-2nd), OPS (1.534-2nd), hits (12-tied 2nd), slugging percentage (.913-3rd), total bases (21-tied 3rd), stolen bases (2-tied 3rd), walks (5-tied 5th), and extra-base hits (4-tied 6th). Jorge, who is rated by MLB.com as the fourth best prospect in the Yankees organization, was signed by the New York Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on January 28, 2012.

David Hess, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Bowie Baysox, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 26th-July 2nd. The 6'2", 180 lb. hurler started a pair of games for the Baysox last week and had a record of 2-0 with 12 strikeouts and a 1.38 ERA. Hess, who is a native of Tullahoma, Tennessee, made his first start of the week on Monday against the visiting Altoona Curve and threw seven shutout innings to earn the win in Bowie's 2-1 victory. He struck out seven batters and walked two while scattering three hits. David made his second start on Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader at Akron and pitched six strong inning in Bowie's 5-2 win. He gave up two runs on three hits while striking out five batters and walking two to earn his eighth win of the season, which ties him for the league lead. The 23-year old tied for the league lead in wins (2) last week and also ranked among the weekly leaders in strikeouts (12-2nd), innings pitched (13.0-tied 2nd), batting average against (.140-4th) and WHIP (0.77-5th). David, who has a record of 8-5 with a 4.41 ERA in 16 games for the Baysox this season, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the fifth round of the 2014 draft after going 9-3 with 104 strikeouts and a 3.24 ERA as a junior at Tennessee Tech.
