MOBILE, Ala. (May 22, 2018) - The Los Angeles Angels announced Tuesday that first baseman Matt Thaiss and right-handed pitcher Jeremy Rhoades have been promoted from the Double-A Mobile BayBears to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Thaiss, 23, played in 89 games for the BayBears over the past two seasons. Last year, he finished the season by posting a .292 average with 25 RBIs, 15 extra-base hits, and 37 walks in 49 games with Mobile. Thaiss started off 2018 with slashing .287/.352/.490 over 40 games and was tied for the team-lead with six home runs and 25 RBIs.
The Jackson, N.J., native was selected by the Angels in the first round (No. 16 overall) of the 2016 MLB Draft out of the University of Virginia. Thaiss was named a MiLB.com Angels Organization All-Star in 2016 and 2017.
In 240 career Minor League games, Thaiss has a .281 average with 21 home runs and 141 RBIs. He is currently the No. 8 prospect in the Angels organization, according to MLB Pipeline.
Rhoades, 25, made 34 relief appearances with Mobile the past two years. In 14 outings this season, he gave up just six runs, five earned, in 24 2/3 innings pitched with four walks and 19 strikeouts. Rhoades has not allowed an earned run since April 11 at Jacksonville, spanning 21 1/3 consecutive innings.
The Wheaton, Ill., native was selected by the Angels in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Illinois State University. In 124 career games, 56 starts, Rhoades has a 24-26 record with a 5.18 ERA and five saves.
This is the first time Thaiss and Rhoades have been promoted to Triple-A in their respective careers.
The BayBears begin a five-game home series against the Biloxi Shuckers Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. CDT. Angels No. 23 prospect Luis Pena (1-4, 6.38 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Cody Ponce (1-2, 5.28 ERA) for the Shuckers.
