ASHEVILLE- In the first Copa de la Diversion contest at McCormick Field this season, the Yacumamas de Asheville knocked off the Winston-Salem Dash 3-2 in the Sunday afternoon series finale. Asheville held their 3-2 lead from the fifth inning all the way to the finish.
Winston-Salem plated a run with a two-out RBI single in the top of the first; however, their advantage was short lived. Colin Barber answered with a two-run double in the bottom of the first and the Yacumamas never trailed again.
Will Wagner added an RBI double in the bottom of the third to give the Yacumamas a 3-1 lead. Adrian Chaidez made his second start of the season and worked four innings on the mound. Chaidez allowed no further damage after the first inning run.
Palmer Wenzel came in and pitched the top of the fifth. The Dash put runners at the corners with no outs but Wenzel kept the Yacumamas in front by limiting the damage to only one run. Chayce McDermott entered in the top of the sixth and went on to toss three hitless innings.
McDermott then came back out to pitch the top of the ninth and Winston-Salem rallied to load the bases with no outs. Chayce then retired the next three batters in succession without allowing the Dash to tie the game. McDermott pitched all four of his innings with a one-run lead.
Chad Stevens notched his third straight multi-hit game for Asheville and Michael Sandle scored two of the three Yacumamas runs. The team will head to Greensboro on Tuesday morning to take on the Grasshoppers in an 11:00am series opener.
