Minor League Baseball today announced the International League’s Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards. Norfolk Tides right-handed pitcher Chayce McDermott was named Pitcher of the Week while Omaha’s Devin Mann was named Player of the Week. McDermott has now won league pitcher of the week three times with the Tides.

In his lone start of the week on May 3 at Nashville, McDermott tossed 6.2 hitless innings, allowing two walks while striking out 11 batters. He carried a perfect game into the seventh inning and was the catalyst for the Tides first combined no hitter in Orioles affiliate franchise history. Nolan Hoffman and Kaleb Ort relieved him and combined to throw 2.1 perfect innings, sealing Norfolk’s first no hitter since Chris Tillman’s no-hit bid on April 28, 2010, against Gwinnett. The performance earned him his first win of the season and the league’s pitcher of the week award for the third time.

McDermott’s 11 strikeouts set a career high and were the most he had punched out in an outing since June 17, 2023, with Bowie against Richmond. He became the first Norfolk pitcher to fan at least 11 batters in a game since Grayson Rodriguez punched out 12 Durham batters on July 4, 2023. McDermott and Buffalo’s Alek Manoah are the only two International League pitchers to record at least 11 strikeouts in an outing thus far this season.

He currently ranks third in the International League in strikeouts with 41, four behind teammate Cade Povich, while posting the third-best batting average against (.180) and seventh-best ERA (2.89) in the league. Since his Triple-A debut on July 15, 2023, McDermott leads the International League in ERA (2.63) and batting average against (.165) while ranking second in strikeouts (105) and WHIP (1.19).

McDermott, 24, was born in Anderson, Indiana and was acquired by the Orioles in a three-way trade from Houston along with Seth Johnson from Tampa Bay. The Astros acquired Trey Mancini from Baltimore and Jayden Murray from the Rays. Tampa Bay acquired José Siri from Houston. McDermott was originally drafted in the 4th round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Ball State University by Houston, who earned the pick in compensation when George Springer signed with Toronto. Before being promoted to Norfolk, McDermott made 16 appearances (14 starts) with Bowie, going 5-6 with a 3.56 ERA (27 ER, 68.1 IP). He struck out twice as many batters as he walked (88 SO, 44 BB) while allowing a 1.26 WHIP and a .176 opponent’s average. McDermott exited Bowie leading the Eastern League among qualified pitchers in opponent’s average and slugging (.292). He also ranked in ERA (5th), strikeouts (5th) and WHIP (6th). His Triple-A debut was July 15 vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
