Cedar Rapids, IA (July 26, 2018) - Keegan McGovern's seventh home run of the year was all the Clinton LumberKings could muster in a 9-1 thumping by the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Perfect Game Field on Thursday night. The Kernels (24-9, 56-46) received a two homer night from Michael Davis and broke out to score five runs in the fourth to drop Clinton (17-15, 56-46) in convincing fashion.
LumberKings starter Clay Chandler saw his five game winning streak come to an end as he was hung with the loss for his six innings of work. He allowed seven runs during his time out on six hits while walking three and striking out four.
The Kernels started the scoring in the second inning with the first of their three home runs. Andrew Bechtold lined the first pitch from Chandler (6-2) to the opposite field to right for his second home run of the season.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Kernels pulled away with a five-run inning in which nine Kernels came to the plate. Davis capped the scoring with the first of his home runs, a two-run homer to right.
Davis slugged his second home run of the game, and third of the series, in the bottom of the sixth before Cedar Rapids would tack on two more runs in the eighth to end a night filled with offense for the Kernels.
The LumberKings had little to show for their time against Kernels starter Tyler Watson. McGovern's fifth inning solo home run was the only blemish for Watson (4-4) over his seven innings of work.
Clinton tallied just three hits in the game all against Watson who struck out nine over his time out while walking just one.
The loss is the LumberKings third straight and ends a stretch of three consecutive series wins.
The LumberKings will meet Cedar Rapids for finale of their three-game series on Friday night. Clinton will throw left-hander Ray Kerr (3-9, 4.29) while the Kernels will tap righty Bailey Ober (7-1, 3.88). Game time is slated for 6:35 PM (CDT). Fans looking to listen to the game can hear Erik Oas on the call on 100.3 FM WCCI and online at lumberkings.com via the tunein radio ap at 6:15 PM with the pregame show.
