Charlotte (52-47, 18-14) starter Blake Bivens needed only 72 pitches to turn in a season-high seven scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out five.
The Stone Crabs got the scoring going in the top of the second.
McKay then took over, hitting his two home runs in consecutive innings to stretch the lead to 5-0.
Charlotte added an additional run in the sixth on a Jake Fraley solo home run to right.
Friday's win was the Stone Crabs' eighth shutout of the year. They'll look to clinch at least a split of the four-game series at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
