Triston McKenzie earned his second Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors for 2017 after receiving the distinction again on Monday. He previously earned the award for his outing May 9 against the Carolina Mudcats.
In his July 4 start against Wilmington, McKenzie struck out 11 while walking none in seven innings. He held the Blue Rocks to three hits, and the only Wilmington run was unearned after a fielding error in the first inning allowed Nick Heath to reach. He stole second base and came home on a two-out single by Chris DeVito. It marked the fourth time this season McKenzie went seven innings and held the opposition to one run. It also represented his third start with double-digit strikeouts.
The right-hander also participated in the 2017 MLB Futures Game Sunday and retired the only batter he faced on two pitches. McKenzie is scheduled to make his next Hillcats start Saturday at Wilmington.
The Hillcats have claimed two of the last three Carolina League Pitcher of the Week awards after
Lynchburg and the Red Sox finish their split four-game series Monday night in Salem, as the Hillcats go for their third win of the set.
