The Cardinals (28-24) seized the lead right out of the gates, striking in the bottom of the first against LHP Jerry Keel (L, 1-1). CF Oscar Mercado led off with a sharp single to left field, extending his current hitting streak to 13 games. He then flew around the bases on an RBI double to left-center field from 2B Dickie Joe Thon, lifting the Cardinals into the 1-0 lead.

Cardinals LHP Ian McKinney (W, 1-0) kept the one-run lead intact with five scoreless frames in the spot start, allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out a pair of Missions (30-24).
