Right-handed pitcher Humberto Mejia has been called up to the Arizona Diamondbacks and will start Monday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the club announced earlier today. The Panama native began the 2021 season with the Amarillo Sod Poodles.
Mejia entered the year as the D-backs' No. 29 rated prospect and was the Sod Poodles Opening Day starter to begin the year in Tulsa. At the time of his promotion to Reno on June 5, Mejia led the Double-A Central in innings pitched with 32.1 innings and had the second-most strikeouts in the league with 37 in his six starts. He surpassed 300 career minor league strikeouts and innings pitched during his stint with Amarillo.
He becomes the first Sod Poodle to appear with the Arizona Diamondbacks and 12th overall Amarillo player to appear in the big leagues including the affiliation with the San Diego Padres in 2019. Mejia made his MLB debut on August 7, 2020 with the Miami Marlins and is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in three Major League starts. Mejia will be the 3rd Panamanian player to wear an Arizona Diamondbacks jersey, joining Randall Delgado (2013-18) and Enrique Burgos (2015-16). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM CT from PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
