ASHEVILLE- Sunday afternoon at McCormick Field belonged to the visitors. The Greenville Drive steamrolled the Asheville Tourists 13-2 and clinched a series victory in the process. Greenville’s Alex Erro drove in eight runs; the most RBI in a game at McCormick Field since Cristian Gonzalez plated nine on June 14, 2022.
The Drive used a two-run Home Run in the first and an Erro three-run Home Run in the second to build an early lead. Greenville plated two more in the third when Erro singled and led 7-0. Asheville’s Jacob Melton and Ryan Clifford combined for back-to-back hits in the bottom of the third which plated the Tourists first run.
Melton clubbed a solo Home Run in the sixth, his 13th of the season, to bring the score to 7-2. The Drive then scored the next six runs, including five in the top of the ninth, to hand the Tourists an 11-run defeat. Erro was part of that five-run ninth with another three-run Home Run.
Michael Sandle and Melton were the two Tourists who recorded multiple hits while Walker Brockhouse was a bright spot on the pitcher’s mound with 1.2 scoreless innings. Tommy Sacco Jr. extended his hit streak to five games in the loss.
The Tourists have seven games left against the Drive this season. Asheville will need to win all seven in order to salvage a series-split with their rivals. One more Greenville victory over the Tourists and the Drive will have cliched the season-series for the second year in a row.
