Chavis, Beeks receive Red Sox awards

Michael Chavis was named the Top Star at the Carolina League All-Star Game in 2017, the circuit's Player of the Month for May as well as a two-time Player of the Week -- all before earning a mid-season promotion to Double-A Portland. On Friday, he added another line to his growing resume.
The Red Sox selected MLB.com's No. 93 overall prospect as their Minor League Offensive Player of the Year and left-hander Jalen Beeks as their Minor League Pitcher of the Year. 

A first-round pick in 2014, Chavis put together a breakout campaign, hitting .318/.388/.641 with 17 homers, two triples and 17 doubles over 59 games with Class A Advanced Salem and earning a bump to Double-A on June 22. He continued to hit for power in the Eastern League, belting 14 homers while producing a .250/.310/.492 line in 67 contests.
The 22-year-old third baseman's 31 homers put him in a tie for fifth in the Minors, while his 68 extra-base hits ranked third and his 265 total bases placed ninth.

Beeks, the No. 17 prospect in the Red Sox system, also enjoyed his best season since he was taken in the 12th round of the 2014 Draft. The 24-year-old posted a 2.19 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 49 1/3 innings for Portland before making the jump to Triple-A Pawtucket, where he owned a 3.86 ERA with 97 punchouts in 95 2/3 frames. His 155 strikeouts between the two levels trailed only Mike Shawaryn (169) for the organizational lead, while his 3.29 combined ERA ranked fourth among full-season Red Sox farmhands.
Catcher Austin Rei was named the system's Defensive Player of the Year after throwing out 40 of 99 attempted basestealers for Salem. Tate Matheny, son of Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, was named Baserunner of the Year. The 23-year-old outfielder went 27-for-34 in stolen base attempts with Salem this season. Keibert Petit and Luis Rivero took home Latin Program Player and Pitcher of the Year honors, respectively.
