LAKELAND, Fla. (July 28, 2017) - RHP Brady Anderson (W, 5-6) churned out 5.2 scoreless innings to help the Fort Myers Miracle (21-13) secure a 2-0 win against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (15-16) on Friday night. The Miracle grabbed a 3-1 series win over their four games in Lakeland.
While Anderson was dealing on the Fort Myers side, LHP Austin Sodders (L, 1-3) pitched around trouble on more than one occasion, but his one unearned run allowed handed him the loss. In the top of the third, Jaylin Davis and Shane Kennedy each singled to begin the inning. With Tanner English batting, catcher Tim Remes tried to pick off Davis at second but threw the ball into centerfield allowing Davis to take third. As the ball rolled into center, Jose Azocar tried to barehand it before it snuck past him and trickled away. Davis scored after the pair of errors to give Fort Myers the 1-0 lead.
Anderson struck out three allowing five hits and one walk. He stranded a one-out Will Maddox triple in the fourth inning and surrendered back-to-back singles in the sixth before turning the ball over to LHP Andrew Vasquez. The lefty caught Josh Lester looking to end the threat and fanned four hitters over his 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
The Miracle loaded the bases in the eighth with one out for Sean Miller. The Miracle second baseman lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score English, providing the insurance run.
LHP Sam Clay (Sv, 8) came out for the ninth to earn the save. He had to work for it after the first two batters reached. With each of the next three Flying Tigers stepping up as the winning run, Clay struck out Will Allen, Ariel Serrano and Tim Remes to shut the door for the Miracle.
Fort Myers heads to Clearwater for a five-game series over four days at Spectrum Field. LHP Lewis Thorpe goes for the Miracle on Saturday at 6:15 PM ET against the Threshers.
