MODESTO, Calif. — The Ports committed too many mistakes on Saturday at John Thurman Field to stay with the Nuts in a 15-4 loss in the penultimate game of the 2024 season.
Rodney Green Jr. started started the scoring with a 412-foot, two-run homer (3) in the first inning to make it 2-0 Ports, when he went down to get a curve ball that he belted out to deep right.
After scoring a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI ground out, the Nuts would take advantage of Ports miscues for their ensuing rallies. A wild pitch from Jake Pfennings took a big enough bounce to score two runs in the second inning to put Modesto ahead 3-2.
The Nuts put up a five spot on the fourth to go up 8-2 after Pfennings left with one on and one out. Reliever Wilfred Alvarado uncorked four wild pitches and allowed a double and a triple, along with a liner into left that ended up an inside-the-park home run for Carter Dorighi.
Tommy White and Green Jr. each drove in a run in the top of the fifth, but Modesto scored four more in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on two hit batsmen, two walks, and a wild pitch off Alvarado and Derek Corro to go up 12-4. Two more walks, two more wild pitches, and an error and a passed ball led to three more runs for the Nuts and a 15-4 lead.
