DES MOINES--The Missions were handcuffed by Cubs pitching Wednesday night as Iowa took both ends of a doubleheader, 6-1 and 3-2, at Principal Park.
Zack Brown (1-3) struggled with his fastball command in the opener, leading to a career-high tying five walks and a hit batsman, while allowing six runs. Only three of the runs were earned.
Brown threw less than 52-percent of his 93 pitches for strikes and faced eight three-ball counts.
Former Mission pitcher Colin Rea worked five scoreless innings in the opening game and helped his own cause by slugging his first career homerun in the fourth inning.
In the nightcap, a trio of Iowa hurlers recorded 13 strikeouts while limiting the Missions to just three hits.
Keston Hiura clubbed his team-leading 8th homerun of the season in game two while Lucas Erceg spoiled the Cubs shutout bid with a run-scoring single in the Missions final at-bat in the opening game.
San Antonio started the day having won eight of the previous 10 games while surrendering only 18 runs.
The teams wrap up the series with a matinee on Thursday before the Missions return home to face Round Rock on Friday night.
