San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino fell 7-4 to the Modesto Nuts Tuesday at San Manuel Stadium. The Sixers did collect their first homer of the season (Jahmai Jones) and got a three-hit (two-triple) game from Roberto Baldoquin but it was not enough.
The Nuts got to 66ers' starter Erik Manoah Jr. (0-1) in the first when Nick Zammerelli drilled a two-run triple to right field. Jhombeyker Morales added a RBI single later in the frame. Modesto (2-4) padded the lead on Gareth Morgan's solo shot with one out in the second making it 4-0. It was Morgan's third dinger in six games. Jones led off the fourth will his solo homer and after Baldoquin tripled later in the frame, Jared Walsh drove him home with a RBI single. Those runs were charged to Modesto starter Randy Bell (1-0) who lasted 5.2 IP and gave up six hits, a walk and fanned six in his Cal League debut. Logan Taylor gave the Nuts a 5-2 lead with a solo homer in the sixth, his second of the year. In the top of the eight the Nuts added two runs when IE reliever Zac Ryan hit Morales with a base-loaded pitch and then walked Tyler Baker to force in another run making it 7-2. The Sixers (3-3) chipped away in the bottom of the inning when Jones drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on Jonah Todd's double (Todd was 2-for-4). Baldoquin then drilled a two-run triple to right-center making it 7-4 but the 66ers could add no more. Michael Koval, an Alta Loma product and Cal Poly Pomona alum, closed Inland Empire out with a perfect ninth for his first save.
