FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 10, 2017) - Nelson Molina launched the first grand slam of the season for the Fort Myers Miracle (28-33) on their way to a 5-1 win over the Tampa Yankees (32-31) on Saturday night to split the four-game series. LHP Lachlan Wells (W, 3-8) allowed a single run over 6.2 innings to earn the win.
In the bottom of the first inning, a pair of runners reached base with one out when Trey Vavra beat out a double play ball on a fielder's choice, keeping the inning alive. After starter LHP Ian Clarkin (L, 3-3) issued a walk to Daniel Kihle, Molina pelted a no doubt grand slam to right field, the first slam of the year for the Miracle. Fort Myers added another run in the second inning when Alex Perez doubled to left-center scoring Brian Navarreto.
Wells took his 5-0 lead and ran with it to the tune of six strikeouts over six scoreless innings. Four of the first six frames for the lefty were 1-2-3 innings. The first batter in the top of the seventh, Trey Amburgey, supplied Tampa's lone run, a solo shot to left. LHP Jonny Drozd took care of the final 2.1 innings surrendering just one hit. The Fort Myers pitching staff did not allow a walk to the Yankees throughout the night.
The Miracle enjoy an off day on Sunday before beginning a four-game series at home against the Charlotte Stone Crabs. First pitch for each of the games is set for 7:05 PM ET.
