Montero Homers Again, Chiefs Win Sunday

Appleton, WI - The Peoria Chiefs got a go-ahead sixth inning solo homer from Elehuris Montero and held on to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2-1 Sunday afternoon. The win moves the Chiefs to 10-6 in the second half and a Western Division best 49-37 overall.

    The Chiefs took the lead in the second inning against starter Dylan File. Yariel Gonzalez reached on a pop-up to third base that was lost in the sun by Gabe Garcia. Julio Rodriguez singled to center and Matt Fiedler put the Chiefs on top 1-0 with a single to left. Rayder Ascanio bounced into a double play and File struck out Bryce Denton to strand Rodriguez at third base.
    Wisconsin tied the game in the third against Johan Oviedo. With one out, Zach Clark hit his sixth home run of the season down the left field line to even the score 1-1.
    The game stayed tied until the sixth inning when Montero led off with his 11th home run of the season and second solo shot in as many days against Wisconsin. The blast, his fourth against Wisconsin in 2018, put the Chiefs on top 2-1.
    Oviedo (4-7) earned the win as he allowed one run on three hits and four walks over six innings as he struck out five. Patrick Dayton walked two and allowed one hit while striking out two in one shutout inning. Zach Prendergast allowed a single and walked one while striking out three in one shutout inning. Kodi Whitley earned his fourth save with a perfect ninth inning.
