Jackson, Tenn. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, were frustrated by the talents of Curtis Taylor, Brendan McKay, and Phoenix Sanders on Wednesday, dropping their series opener to the Montgomery Biscuits at Riverwalk Stadium, 3-0.
Jackson, Tenn. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, were frustrated by the talents of Curtis Taylor, Brendan McKay, and Phoenix Sanders on Wednesday, dropping their series opener to the Montgomery Biscuits at Riverwalk Stadium, 3-0.
The Generals (24-20) were shut out for the third time this season, while Montgomery (29-16) recorded their eighth blanking of a 2019 opponent.
Montgomery closer Curtis Taylor excelled in a game-opening role for a change, tossing two shutout innings to begin the game while stranding a pair of men on base. The Biscuits turned things over to McKay (3-0, 1.30 ERA) in the third, and he retired fourteen batters in a row before allowing a seventh-inning single to Andy Young with two outs.
McKay's most vulnerable moment came in the eighth inning, and it didn't come easily. McKay conceded a lead-off walk to former college teammate Drew Ellis after a ten-pitch battle, and he allowed a broken-bat single to Dominic Miroglio to put the potential tying run on base. From there, McKay induced a pop-up to first base and a pair of punchouts, closing his night after 84 pitches in six innings. Phoenix Sanders (S, 4) got the save with a three-batter ninth inning. The Jackson offense finished 0-for-5 with men in scoring position, with Young recording two of the Generals' three hits overall.
On the hill, Kevin McCanna (2-1, 1.50 ERA) gave a good account of himself through the first four innings, allowing only three baserunners in that span. With two men out in the sixth and a man aboard, McCanna gave up an RBI triple to right-center by Miles Mastrobuoni that broke the game's scoreless tie. Josh Lowe followed with an RBI double that drove in Mastrobuoni, marking McCanna's first outing with multiple runs allowed. McCanna finished with four strikeouts, two walks, and four hits permitted in total. Tyler Mark contributed a pair of scoreless frames in relief, while Cameron Gann gave up a run in the ninth inning during his first appearance since 2017.
