Mudcats Complete Suspended Game with Shutout Win

SALISBURY – Jesus Chirinos went 2-for-5 with RBI doubles in the first and fifth innings, and starter Stiven Cruz and reliever Pablo Garabitos combined on a five-hit shutout as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds 4-0 in the second game of a six-game series between Carolina (20-18, 54-50) and Delmarva (13-25, 34-69) at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The game originally began on Wednesday, August 10, but was suspended in the fifth and completed on Thursday, August 11 in Delmarva.

Carolina originally took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI double from Chirinos off starter Moises Chace. Chirinos struck again later in the game with his second RBI double during a three run Carolina fifth. The fifth also saw a two-run double from Robert Moore. Chirinos was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI before the suspension. Moore was 1-for-3 and had also drove in two runs.

Cruz started for the Mudcats and worked through three no-hit innings before allowing a single in the fourth. Cruz was scheduled to return for the fifth before the game was stopped. He ended up going through four innings with a hit, a walk and four strikeouts.

Garabitos (3-0) took over in relief of Cruz when the game resumed and would go on to finish it while pitching through five scoreless innings. Garabitos scattered four hits, walked one and struck out four while finishing off the Shorebirds.

The victory was Carolina’s fourth straight and put them up 2-0 in their current with Delmarva.
