FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 22, 2023) – The Mighty Mussels notched their fourth win in a row Tuesday after Ben Ethridge’s five innings of one-run ball set the tone in Fort Myers’ 7-1 win over the Daytona Tortugas at Hammond Stadium.
The Fort Myers’ (57-58, 23-26) pitching staff was stellar in relief of Ethridge (3-5) as well. Minor-League rehabber Sean Mooney struck out two hitters over a scoreless inning of work, while Danny Moreno and Zach Veen got the Mussels to the finish line, tossing three scoreless innings and allowing just two hits.
With no score in the top of the first, Hector Rodriguez singled to right and stole second base. With one out in the inning, Cam Collier roped a liner to right to score Rodriguez and give Daytona (50-62, 21-26) a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, the Mussels answered back when Luke Keaschall belted a triple off the wall in right to place a runner in scoring position with one out. One batter later, Ricardo Olivar looped a single to shallow right-center that scored Keaschall to tie the game at 1-1. With two outs in the same frame, Rubel Cespedes unleashed a two-run shot to right center that put the Mussels up 3-1. The ball traveled 420 feet for his team-leading 11th dinger of the season.
Still leading 3-1 in the bottom of the third, Keaschall lined a double to lead off the inning. The next hitter was Olivar, who belted a double to left that brought home Keaschall to extend the lead to 4-1. With Olivar on third, Cespedes lined a sacrifice fly to right to push the lead to 5-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Keaschall walked and Olivar was hit by a pitch with one out. After an errant pickoff attempt moved Keaschall to third, Danny De Andrade lifted a sacrifice fly to center to extend the advantage to 6-1. Cespedes then proceeded to line a two-out double to right that scored Olivar and capped the scoring at 7-1.
The Mussels will look to extend their win streak to five as they hand Jack Noble (0-2, 3.15) the ball to counter Jared Lyons (2-4, 3.95) of the Tortugas. First pitch slated for 7:00 p.m. with coverage beginning at 6:45 on the Mighty Mussels Baseball Network.
