RHP Nick Neidert (W, 10-6) racked up a career-high 13 strikeouts of the Biloxi Shuckers (64-48, 23-19) in a 5-1 victory for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (44-66, 16-26) on Saturday night at MGM Park.
LHP Cameron Roegner had his first opportunity to toss multiple innings for the Shuckers and did not disappoint. The 2018 Carolina League All-Star allowed a single run with five strikeouts over five innings, leaving the game after tossing 69 pitches in a 1-1 contest.
The two sides traded solo home runs early. Justin Twine took Roegner deep in the first, while Clint Coulter belted his third home run of the week in the second inning. Coulter finished with the home run and a double to provide two of the six hits on the night.
While Neidert was dealing on the mound, the Jacksonville bats plated their runs in the top of the seventh. Joe Dunand and John Norwood started the frame with singles. After RHP Daniel Reynolds (L, 2-1) hit Rodrigo Vigil to load the bases, Neidert helped his own cause with a run-scoring single to give the Jumbo Shrimp a 2-1 lead. They added two more when Braxton Lee dribbled a ball to Keston Hiura at second. The Biloxi second baseman's throw to first sailed away from Richie Shaffer, allowing two more runs to score.
The Jumbo Shrimp provided the 5-1 final in the ninth when Rodrigo Vigil socked his third home run of the year to left field. RHP Tommy Eveld wrapped up the game for Jacksonville with a scoreless ninth.
The Shuckers look to even the series at two games apiece with RHP Cody Ponce (6-5, 4.65) on the mound on Sunday afternoon. The Jumbo Shrimp will send out RHP Max Duval (2-11, 7.46) with first pitch at 4:05 PM CT on a Military Salute Sunday.
