Nevarez slugs Power to 10-4 win over Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. (May 17, 2019) - Steven Moyers tied his career-high in strikeouts and Dean Nevarez collected a career-high four RBI as West Virginia dominated the Greenville Drive, 10-4, Friday night at Fluor Field at the West End.
West Virginia (21-19) kickstarted the scoring in the opening frame, as Johnny Slater tripled to lead off the first and Jarred Kelenic singled him in to give the Power a 1-0 lead. The first-inning onslaught continued with a single from J.R. Davis and an RBI base hit from Onil Pena to make it 2-0 West Virginia. After Davis scored on a wild pitch, Nevarez unloaded on a fastball and drove it 409 feet over the Green Monster in left, his fourth homer of the season, that handed the Power a 5-0 lead.

Moyers (3-3) took the mound with a sizable lead and retired the first six Drive (15-25) hitters that he faced. West Virginia struck for two more in the third inning when Nevarez lasered a double down the left-field line, thrusting the Power ahead 7-0. 
Greenville answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but West Virginia pushed the lead back to seven with two more of their own in the fourth against Brayan Bello (1-3) for a 9-2 advantage. The Drive got those runs back with a two-run homer from Alan Marrero that shrunk the lead to 9-4. 
Moyers wrapped up his outing with another quality start on the hill, his fifth of the season, after he lasted six innings, surrendered three earned runs and struck out nine. The University of Rhode Island product has now tossed at least six innings in each of his last five starts. Sal Biasi took over in the seventh and worked two scoreless innings in relief, fanning four batters, which is tied for his season-high. 
West Virginia added to their lead in the eighth, as Davis came across to score on a wild pitch for the third time on the night. Bryan Pall entered in the ninth and spun a hitless frame to close out the win. 
The Power continues their four-game set with the Drive Saturday night at Fluor Field at the West End, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. RHP Deivy Florido (1-0, 1.42 ERA) heads to the hill for West Virginia, while Greenville counters with LHP Angel Padron (1-3, 3.09 ERA).
