CHATTANOOGA, TN - Two runs in the eighth and a run in the ninth sent the Biloxi Shuckers (45-30) to another come-from-behind victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts (37-37) 4-2 on Monday night at AT&T Field. Jake Gatewood recorded four hits in the game, and Keston Hiura launched his second Double-A homer in the Shuckers' fourth straight win.
Gatewood started the scoring in the fourth. The first baseman launched the second pitch of his at bat over the centerfield wall, his league-leading 14th home run of the season, to put Biloxi up 1-0.
RHP Zack Brown didn't factor into the decision but turned in another quality outing, keeping the Lookouts off the scoreboard through the first six frames. Brown was backed up by excellent defense all night, including a 7-6-2 putout of Jimmy Kerrigan at home in the sixth to keep the Shuckers out in front. All told, Brown hurled 6.2 innings, allowing a pair of runs on seven hits while issuing three free passes and striking out five.
Chattanooga broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning. Mitchell Kranson singled to leadoff the inning and Jaylin Davis followed with a walk. After a failed sacrifice attempt by Brian Navarreto, Alex Perez doubled off the centerfield wall, driving in Kranson. Davis attempted to score on the play, but was thrown out on a pair of strong throws from right fielder Clint Coulter and a relay from Lucas Erceg. Ryan Walker chased Brown from the game with a double to center, scoring Perez to put the Lookouts up 2-1. RHP Jon Olczak (W, 4-2) stifled the rally, striking out Kerrigan to end the frame.
Biloxi's offense had an immediate response in the eighth. Hiura walked and went first-to-third on a single by Gatewood, who took second on the throw. Erceg bounced a single through the right side off LHP Sam Clay (L, 1-4), scoring Hiura to knot the game at two all. The next two batters were unable to drive in Gatewood from third, bringing up Coulter, who singled up the middle to drive in the go-ahead run, putting Biloxi back in front 3-2.
Hiura gave the Shuckers an insurance run in the ninth, catapulting a one-out opposite-field homer to right, his second with the Shuckers, to make it 4-2. The Brewers' number one prospect has hit safely in his last six games, and has hit safely in 18 of 19 starts with the Shuckers.
LHP Quintin Torres-Costa (H, 7) recorded a pair of outs in the eighth to pick up his league-leading seventh hold, and RHP Daniel Reynolds (S, 1) worked a 1-2-3 ninth to lock down his first save with Biloxi.
The Shuckers close out their six-game series with Chattanooga on Tuesday morning at 10:15 AM CT. RHP Trey Supak (0-4, 4.85) gets the start for the Shuckers against LHP Lewis Thorpe (4-4, 4.26). The game can be heard on Cruisin' WCGM 1240 AM/ FM 100.9, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
