Mets' Guillorme grinds out five hits

Luis Guillorme opened some eyes this spring after snatching an opponent's bat out of midair in the Mets' dugout. Now he's starting to make noise with his own bat.

New York's 16th-ranked prospect went 5-for-5 on Wednesday, recording his second career five-hit game in Double-A Binghamton's 4-3 win over host Portland. He also accomplished the feat on a 5-for-6 day for Rookie-level Kingsport on Aug. 8, 2014.

Guillorme started his day with a second-pitch single to center field with two outs in the second inning against right-hander Teddy Stankiewicz, the No. 24 Red Sox prospect. The Rumble Ponies shortstop beat out a single to short on the second pitch again off the righty in the fifth, scoring one batter later on Jio Mier's double to center to give his team a 3-2 lead.
New York's 10th-round pick in 2013 doubled to left with one out in the seventh vs. Stankiewicz for his lone extra-base hit of the game, but was stranded at second. In the ninth, he dropped in a single to left off another righty, Boston's No. 13 prospect Jake Cosart.

After seeing nine pitches in his first four plate appearances combined, Guillorme worked a 10-pitch at-bat against righty Jamie Callahan (1-1) and fouled off six pitches before singling to left. Three batters later, Biondi singled in Tomás Nido with the go-ahead run.

Guillorme's big game at the plate more than doubled his season hit total, as the 22-year-old shortstop had four hits in his first 17 at-bats with no multi-hit performances coming into the game. Wednesday marked the second time he racked up at least six total bases in a game in his Minor League career -- the first was his prior five-hit game, which featured three doubles.
The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Florida native's season slash line jumped from .235/.381/.294 to .409/.500/.500 through six games. Guillorme is looking to improve on his .263/.332/.315 line from 2016 at Class A Advanced St. Lucie after a breakout 2015 season with Class A Savannah, when he hit .318/.391/.354 in 122 games.
