CLINTON IA (August 3, 2019) - The Clinton LumberKings saw a ninth inning rally come one run short with a 7-6 loss to the Beloit Snappers at Nelsoncorp Field on Saturday night. Christopher Torres and Evan Edwards each homered for Clinton (26-14, 59-51) but could not hold off a late charge by the Snappers (16-25, 43-66).
LumberKings starter Remey Reed turned in an up and down performance on the mound. He allowed single runs in the first and third innings but turned in a five-inning performance and departed with the lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Clinton took their only lead of the night on the strength of the long ball. Evan Edwards led off the frame with a line drive home run to right and - after singles by Bubba Hollins and Zach Scott - Christopher Torres smashed a three-run home run even further into right for his fourth homer of the year.
The lead did not hold up as Beloit inched a run closer in the top of the sixth inning and then struck for three runs in the eighth against Raul Brito. The Snappers sent nine men to the plate for a three-run rally that put them in front for good.
Brito (3-3) was charged with a blown save - his second of the year - and was given the loss for a 1.1 inning performance. He allowed three runs on two hits while walking one and striking out one.
Beloit would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth which benefited Snappers reliever Jaimito Lebron who was given the win. Lebron (2-1) worked three innings and allowed no runs on four hits while walking none and striking out one.
Trailing 7-4, the LumberKings scored twice in the bottom of the ninth. Zach Scott singled with one out in the inning - his third hit of the night - and was followed by singles from Christopher Torres and Kameron Misner, the last chasing home the first run of the inning. Peyton Burdick brought home the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right. With the tying run at second, J.D. Osbrone grounded out to third to end the game.
The LumberKings will meet the Beloit Snappers for second game of their four-game series on Sunday afternoon.
