MEMPHIS, Tennessee -John Nogowski extended his hitting streak to 13 games, but the Memphis Redbirds dropped the series finale with the Nashville Sounds (Rangers) Friday night at AutoZone Park, 3-1.
The Redbirds (33-48) had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout ended the ballgame.
Nogowski singled in the sixth inning to move his hitting streak to 13-straight contests, and he also drew two walks. Adolis García moved his hitting streak to 10 after going 1-for-4, and he stole his fifth base in the last five games. Edmundo Sosa has now hit safely in eight-in-a-row, one shy of his season high, after going 1-for-4.
Jake Woodford started and went 6.0 solid innings, allowing only two runs on six hits. The Pacific Coast League's starting pitcher in the upcoming Triple-A All-Star Game struck out four and walked two. Hunter Cervenka allowed Nashville's (35-45) third and final run of the game in the seventh, and Jesus Cruz and Chasen Shreve worked perfect eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to set up Memphis' comeback attempt.
Irving Lopez drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate, and Kramer Robertson popped out ahead of a Randy Arozarena single to put the tying run on base. After an infield flyout Nogowski walked to load the bases with two outs, but Tyler O'Neill struck out to wrap things up.
Arozarena was 4-for-5 with a double in the leadoff spot for Memphis. Lopez was on base all four times he came to the plate with three walks and a single. He scored Memphis' only run.
The Redbirds now turn their attention to the New Orleans Baby Cakes (Marlins) for a five-game series at AutoZone Park through Memphis' Independence Day Celebration presented by AutoZone on Wednesday, July 3.
