Under the lights in Pittsfield Friday night, the Sea Unicorns dropped a heart breaker to the Suns, with the home team grabbing a walk-off victory off the bat of first baseman Jack Ryan.
Norwich took a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth, but walked the bases loaded before Ryan’s RBI single won the game.
The Sea Unicorns scored a run in each of the last four innings to take a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Sean Swenson got things started with an RBI single in the sixth. It was Norwich’s second hit of the night after being stifled by Pittsfield starter Izaiya Mestre.
Mestre cruised through five innings, striking out six while allowing just three batters to reach base. His efforts earned him Future’s League pitcher of the night honors.
Norwich’s second and third runs came via error, with the third run tying the game in the top of the eighth.
In the ninth, the Sea Unicorns took the lead when Jackson Ferrigno laced a 3-2 double to left, bringing in Jared Zimbardo for Norwich’s first lead of the night.
One thing that is evident with this Sea Unicorns team is the fight in them. They took the lead late in both Thursday and Friday’s games, but were unable to hold on to that lead Friday night.
Norwich was scheduled to play Brockton Saturday night, but the game has been postponed due to weather. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader in Brockton on June 21, starting at 3:00 pm. Both games will be seven innings.
