ASHEVILLE- The Asheville Tourists were unable to handle the Winston-Salem Dash’s fast start on Saturday evening. Asheville fell behind 4-0 after one inning and an eight-run fourth put Winston-Salem on top 12-0. The Dash finished out the contest with a 13-2 win over the Tourists.
Asheville’s starting pitcher, Jose Alberto Rivera, had to depart the game after only one-third of an inning with an apparent injury. Later in the game, catcher Cesar Salazar exited with injury while in the field.
The Tourists were forced to go to their bullpen often throughout the game. Jonathan Sprinkle, Yeremi Ceballos, and Michael Horrell combined to pitch six innings and none of them allowed a run. Juan Pablo Lopez was not as fortunate. The left-hander was charged with all eight runs scored by the Dash in the big fourth inning.
Offensively, Asheville struggled against the Winston-Salem pitching staff. Asheville managed their first hit of the game in the fourth inning when Alex McKenna singled to lead off the frame. Their next hit came in the seventh on a Joe Perez single. Perez came in to score the Tourists first run on Enmanuel Valdez’s sacrifice fly to left.
Asheville added a second run in the bottom of the eighth on back-to-back singles by Freudis Nova and Deury Carrasco. Mckenna plated the run with a fielder’s choice. Alex Holderbach came on to pitch the top of the ninth and the catcher did well on the mound. Holderbach recorded a pair of strikeouts only surrendered one run.
The Tourists and the Dash will wrap up their six-game series on Sunday afternoon. The first pitch is set for 1:05pm.
