Peoria, IL - Behind Mike O'Reilly's seven scoreless innings and Matt Fiedler's second home run of the year, the Peoria Chiefs defeated the Beloit Snappers on Wednesday night in a pitcher's duel 1-0. The Chiefs improve to 9-5 in the second half and 39-44 overall as they look for the series sweep of the Snappers on Thursday with a 7:00 pm first pitch.
The game was scoreless into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Chiefs struck against Beloit starter Zack Erwin to take a 1-0 lead. Matt Fiedler homered, his second of the season since becoming a member of the Chiefs on June 22, to right field with no outs to give Peoria the first lead of the game 1-0.
In the seventh inning, O'Reilly's final inning of work, he struck out the side to give him nine strikeouts, one shy of his career high 10, in back-to-back outings. Dewin Perez entered on the mound for the Chiefs in the bottom of the ninth inning looking for his first save of the season. After allowing a one-out walk to Edwin Díaz, Perez got pinch-hitter J.C. Rodriguez to ground into a double play to end the game.
O'Reilly (7-2) earned the win allowing only four hits over seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and one walk. Bryan Dobzanski tossed one hitless inning giving up just one walk. Perez recorded his first save of the year throwing one hitless inning in the ninth.
