The A's released a statement saying the organization was "devastated" by the death of Thomas, a 24-year-old infielder who was the son of A's pro scout Tom Thomas.
"Casey was a wonderful young man and teammate and will be missed by all in the A's organization," Oakland general manager Billy Beane said in a statement.
Thomas, the A's 34th-round pick in the 2016 Draft, had been in Arizona at extended spring training at the time of his death. The team did not specify the date of his passing.
Last season, the shortstop from Phoenix hit .258 with 18 RBIs, two doubles and three stolen bases in 37 games for the Rookie-level Arizona League Athletics. He was drafted out of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
"We were devastated to hear of this tragedy within the A's family," Beane said. "Our hearts go out to Tom and his family on their loss."
The team did not disclose the cause of death. "Additional information is not known at this time," the statement read.
