VANCOUVER, BC – A single run on four hits was all the Canadians could muster in a 3-1 series-concluding loss to the Everett AquaSox [Mariners] Sunday afternoon at Rogers Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.
The teams traded zeroes for the first three innings before Randy Bednar hit a go-ahead solo homer with two outs in the fourth. Everett added two more in the fifth on three hits and a walk to lead 3-0.
A run in the bottom of the fifth spoiled the Everett shutout bid. Devonte Brown led off with a double, went to third on a flyout and scored on an RBI ground out from Michael Turconi to cut the deficit to two.
That proved to be it for the C’s bats. They managed to put only two more runners on from the sixth through the ninth – both via walk – and a quartet of Frogs relievers kept them on their heels.
Vancouver’s ‘pen was once again solid. Anders Tolhurst, Conor Larkin and Sam Ryan combined on 4.2 scoreless innings of relief, with Larkin striking out five of the seven batters he faced between the sixth and the seventh.
The Canadians finish their regular season series with the AquaSox with 12 wins and 12 losses. Turconi had a third inning single that extended his hitting streak to 13 consecutive games. He’s now reached in 27 in a row, a C’s season high.
After an off-day Monday, the Canadians travel to Hillsboro to take on the Hops [D-Backs] Tuesday through Sunday at Ron Tonkin Field. Coverage is available on CanadiansBaseball.com, the MiLB First Pitch app and the Sportsnet Radio Network.
