Omar Vizquel, uno de los guantes más finos de Grandes Ligas y candidato a ingresar al Salón de la Fama de Cooperstown, dirigirá a Toros de Tijuana en la temporada 2020 de la Liga Mexicana de Beisbol (LMB).
El venezolano se presentará como timonel en México, luego de una épica carrera de 24 campañas como pelotero en la "Gran Carpa", en las que ganó once "Guantes de Oro", nueve de ellos en forma consecutiva y participó en tres "Juegos de Estrellas", además es el líder de todos los tiempos en dobles matanzas como torpedero con mil 734.
El timonel de 52 años será el sexto manejador de Toros de Tijuana con experiencia en Grandes Ligas, ya que se vistió con las casacas de Marineros de Seattle, Indios de Cleveland, Gigantes de San Francisco, Rangers de Texas, Medias Blancas de Chicago y Azulejos de Toronto, de 1989 al 2012.
Su etapa como estratega despuntó con éxito en la organización de Medias Blancas de Chicago, donde, en 2018, fue designado "Manejador del Año", al dirigir al equipo de Winston-Salem Dash de clase A (avanzada) en la Liga de las Carolinas, cerrando con un récord de 84-54 con el liderato de las dos vueltas en que se divide la temporada.
En 2019 ascendió a Doble A como timonel de Birmingham Barons.
Además, del 2013 al 2017 fue parte del cuerpo técnico de Tigres de Detroit en Grandes Ligas, desempeñándose como coach de primera base e instructor de jugadores de cuadro y corrido de bases.
Con Venezuela fue el manejador de la selección nacional en el Clásico Mundial de Beisbol del 2017.
Como jugador Vizquel es considerado uno de los mejores torpederos de la historia. Su porcentaje a la defensiva de .985 es el más alto de todos los tiempos en Grandes Ligas, además es el parador en corto con más duelos disputados y con sus 2 mil 877 imparables, es el venezolano con más hits en la "Gran Carpa".
Debutó a los 21 años el 3 de abril de 1989 con Marineros de Seattle en un duelo contra Atléticos de Oakland y se retiró el 3 de octubre del 2012, completando una longeva y exitosa carrera de 24 campañas.
Vizquel es firme candidato a ser elegido al Salón de la Fama y este año tendrá su tercera oportunidad al aparecer en la boleta junto a 32 estrellas más, entre las que destacan Derek Jeter, Barry Bonds, Curt Schilling, Bobby Abreu, Larry Walker y Manny Ramírez.
Óscar Romero, director deportivo de Toros de Tijuana, informó que el lunes 9 de diciembre se llevará a cabo la presentación oficial de Omar Vizquel a los medios de comunicación durante los Winter Meetings que se desarrollarán en San Diego.
El conjunto fronterizo iniciará en casa el camino a su segundo campeonato, al arrancar el 7 de abril la temporada 2020 de la LMB cuando reciban a Pericos de Puebla.
