DUNEDIN, Fla. (August 3, 2017) - Kevin Padlo delivered both RBIs and three Charlotte Stone Crabs combined on a shutout in a 2-0 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays Thursday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
Stone Crabs (53-54, 22-17) starter Brandon Lawson (4-4) battled through five shutout innings, allowing five hits and two walks while fanning three. Lawson now owns a 1.66 ERA over his first four starts since moving from the bullpen to the rotation.
Charlotte earned both runs against Dunedin (57-52, 23-17) starting pitcher John Straka (1-1). With the game scoreless in the third, Angel Moreno doubled to left before two walks pushed him to third. With two outs, Padlo lined a hit to left to give the Stone Crabs a 1-0 lead.
Still up by that margin in the top of the sixth, Ryan Boldt singled to start the inning. Padlo followed by smacking a double to the left field corner to score Boldt and give the Stone Crabs a 2-0 lead.
The Charlotte bullpen would do the rest. Michael Velasquez worked three scoreless innings before allowing two straight singles to start the bottom of the ninth. Reece Karalus came in with two on and nobody out and retired the next three batters to seal the win.
The Stone Crabs will look to clinch at least a split of the series Friday night at 6:30 p.m. José De León (1-0, 2.16) makes the start for Charlotte against Jordan Romano (5-5, 3.20) of Dunedin. Coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
