JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals (75-46, 38-17) and the Daytona Tortugas (61-59, 30-24) split a double header on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Palm Beach is now 8-6 in double headers this season but trail the regular season series 13-10 against Daytona.

GAME ONE

The Cardinals were the home team in game one as the scheduled game of the day. Tekoah Roby started on the mound for Palm Beach as part of a minor league rehab assignment from Double-A Springfield and tossed a scoreless inning with one strikeout in his first appearance on the mound since May 14th.

Jose Davila came out of the Cardinals’ bullpen for his first relief appearance of the season in the top of the second inning. The Tortugas loaded the bases with one out thanks to an infield single by Ricardo Cabrera and two walks. Malvin Valdez grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Cabrera and Daytona took the early 1-0 lead.

However, the Cardinals provided an immediate response on offense in the bottom of the frame. Jose Cordoba led off with a solo home run to left field for his fifth of the season and it tied the game at 1-1.

Palm Beach went back to work in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead. With one out, JJ Wetherholt and Joshua Baez hit back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners. Ian Petrutz drove in Wetherholt on an RBI single to right field to put the Cardinals ahead. After a pitching change for Daytona replacing starting pitcher Stephen Quigley with Jimmy Romano, Cordoba hit into an RBI fielder’s choice to give the Beach Birds a 3-1 lead.

After another shutdown inning by Davila in the top of the fourth inning, Lizandro Espinoza led off the bottom of the frame with a solo home run, which was his sixth of the season, and extended the Palm Beach lead to 4-1.

Davila labored through 4 1/3 innings of work in the game and mostly escaped jams, but in the top of the sixth the pitch count climbed. With runners on first and second base for Daytona, the Cardinals brought in Luis Gastelum to finish the frame. However, with two outs, Valdez hit a two-RBI double down the left field line which cut the Palm Beach lead to 4-3.

The Tortugas put the tying and winning runners on base in the top of the seventh inning, but the Cardinals kept the Tortugas away from home plate to secure the game one victory with a 4-3 final score.

GAME TWO

The Tortugas took over as the home team for game two to make up for a rainout back on July 20th at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona as Jason Savacool (L, 4-4) faced Ben Brutti (W, 2-3) on the mound.

Brutti struggled with his command in the top of the first inning walking the first three hitters. Joshua Baez grounded into a 5-4-3 double play which allowed Christian Martin to score from third base and Palm Beach took an early 1-0 lead.

The score remained until the bottom of the third inning off of Savacool. After Ryan McCrystal hit a single with one out, Malvin Valdez came off the bench and hit a pinch-hit RBI double to tie the ballgame at 1-1. In the next inning, Ariel Almonte led off with a single and Ricardo Cabrera hit a two-run home run to put the Tortugas on top 3-1.

Meanwhile, Brutti finished with a season-high five innings and allowed one run on four walks and did not give up a hit.

Randel Clemente came out of the Palm Beach bullpen and tossed two scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Jonah Hurney (Sv, 7) allowed the only two hits the Cardinals recorded, both in the top of the seventh inning, but finished with no runs allowed and Palm Beach settled for the double header split with a 3-1 loss in game two.

The series between Palm Beach and Daytona returns to nine innings of action with game four of seven on Thursday, August 29th with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Click here to purchase your tickets.
