PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (August 4, 2019) - Tommy Romero turned in six quality innings Sunday, but the Palm Beach Cardinals shut out Charlotte 6-0 to earn a split of the weekend series at Charlotte Sports Park.
Romero (9-4) allowed just two hits over six innings, striking out six while walking two. Amongst full season pitchers, he right-hander ranks second in Minor League Baseball in ERA (1.85).
In a scoreless game in the top of the fourth, Cardinals (50-59, 15-30) center fielder Chase Pinder drew a walk. Two batters later, Nolan Gorman roped a single into right to move Pinder to second. After a walk to Luken Baker loaded the bases with one out, Nick Dunn lifted a sacrifice fly to right center to give Palm Beach a 1-0 lead.
With Palm Beach still leading by that margin in the top of the eighth, Michael Perri doubled down the left field line to start the inning. After a bunt moved him to third, Pinder walked again to put men at the corners. The next batter was Dennis Ortega, who drove in Perri with a fielder's choice to make it 2-0. After another walk, Baker stroked a single to center to cap the inning at 3-0 Palm Beach.
The Cardinals rallied for three more runs in the top of the ninth to end the scoring at 6-0.
The Stone Crabs (66-44, 31-12) will now play five games in 48 hours against the Bradenton Marauders.
