BRIDGEWATER, NJ- Pitcher Carson Palmquist turned in a stellar outing in his Hartford Yard Goats debut, but Somerset rallied for two runs in the last of the ninth to deal Hartford a 2-1 loss Thursday night at rainy TD Bank Ballpark. Palmquist, the Colorado Rockies third round draft pick in 2022 out of the University of Miami, pitched seven scoreless innings, allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked one. The southpaw threw 93 pitches in hooking up in a pitchers' duel against Somerset righthander Richard Fitts.
The Yard Goats took a 1-0 lead in the seventh inning against reliever Jesus Liranzo. Colin Simpson drilled an opposite-field double into the left field corner with one out, before Sterlin Thompson delivered him with a two-out single to center. After reliever Blake Goldsberry tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning against the Patriots, Elijah Dunham pulled a Goldsberry pitch over the right field wall to lead off the last of the ninth and tie the game. Three straight walks by Goldsberry and Juan Mejia loaded the bases, setting the stage for Jeisson Rosario's game-winning single to right, Somerset's second walk-off victory over the Yard Goats in three nights.
Thompson's RBI-single and double, Braxton Fulford's two doubles and a single and double by Warming Bernabel led Hartford's eight-hit attack. The Yard Goats dropped to 22-25 with the loss and now trail first place Somerset by 4 1/2 games and second place Binghamton by three games in the playoff race. If Somerset, winner of the first-half, wins the second-half in the Eastern League's split season format, the club which finishes in second place in the second-half will qualify for the post season.
The Yard Goats continue a six-game road trip in Somerset, New Jersey on Friday night (7:05PM). RHP Andrew Quezada will pitch for Hartford and RHP Drew Thorpe will start for Somerset. The game will be broadcast on AM 1410, FM 100.9 and the iheart radio app.
