DES MOINES, IA – The Memphis Redbirds opened their week with a 5-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs on Tuesday night at Principal Park.
Tommy Parsons (11-3) was stellar against the I-Cubs, allowing just one run on a solo home run while striking out six over seven innings, which tied a season-high. Parsons’ 11 wins are tied for the most in the International League with Caleb Boushley (Nashville).
The Redbirds offense started early with Scott Hurst, the game’s second batter, slugging a solo blast to put Memphis up 1-0. In the second inning, after a Pedro Pages double, Kramer Robertson singled him home to make it 2-0. Memphis took advantage of a single and a couple of throwing errors to score their third run of the game in the fourth inning.
In the sixth, the offense loaded the bases and scratched across two more insurance runs.
Steven Matz pitched an inning on an MLB Rehab assignment and recorded three ground ball outs while James Naile polished off the ninth.
The Memphis Redbirds (67-69) and Iowa Cubs (61-75) continue their six-game series on Wednesday, September 14. LHP Connor Thomas makes the start against RHP Matt Swarmer. First pitch is scheduled for 12:08pm CDT.
