Patriots shut out in 5-0 loss

Erie, Penn. - The Somerset Patriots (21-13) were shut out Saturday night for only the second time this season in a 5-0 loss to the Erie SeaWolves (23-11) at UPMC Park.

Somerset collected just three hits in the contest. Patriots starting pitcher Matt Krook (L, 1-1) struck out a season-high nine batters over five innings, but allowed three runs in the loss.

Erie opened the scoring on a two-out, two-run triple from John Valente in the bottom of the second. Andre Lipcius added a two-out RBI triple in the fifth to increase the SeaWolves lead to 3-0.

Two more Erie runs scored in the seventh on a Valente (3) solo home run and a Drew Ward RBI single.

Pedro Payano (W, 3-1) tossed six shutout innings to earn the win. Cale Coshow (SV, 1) recorded the final nine outs in relief for his first save of the season.

The Patriots and SeaWolves conclude their series Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Janson Junk (0-1, 1.17 ERA) takes the mound for Somerset. First pitch at UPMC Park is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
