Reading, PennsylvaniaPaxton Schultz turned in the start of the season for New Hampshire on Friday night, throwing a career-high 6.2 innings in the longest outing by a Fisher Cats starter all season. The Fisher Cats (7-9, 38-47) only needed one run behind the pitching masterclass and won, 1-0, over the Reading Fightin Phils (Philadelphia Phillies, 9-7, 38-47).

The righty from Utah Valley University finished allowing six hits in 6.2 shutout innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out three. Johan Camargo and Jhailyn Ortiz combined for five of the six hits against Schultz. Camargo made his fourth MLB rehab start with Reading this week, and Ortiz is a stunning 9-for-13 in the series.

Schultz’s start was his fourth straight outing allowing one earned run or fewer. In July, he has a 2-0 record with 0.57 ERA in 15.2 innings of work. His WHIP this month is 0.77.

Ortiz led off the seventh inning with a double off Schultz, and he moved to third on a flyout to center. After 2021 Fisher Cat Kevin Vicuna reached on catcher’s interference, Schultz had runners on second and third with one out. He struck out Jack Conley for out number two, and manger Cesar Martin handed the reins to Andrew Bash.

Bash finished out the game with 2.1 scoreless innings, earning his first Double-A save of his career. He loaded the bases in the eighth inning but punched out Reading’s Aldrem Corredor to end the frame.

New Hampshire’s only run scored in the sixth when Cam Eden doubled to bring home Ryan Gold. Despite being outhit, 9-6, the Fisher Cats held on for the 1-0 win. Friday was just their third win all season with less hits than their opponent.
