MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (June 23, 2021) – In a press conference today at Pelicans Ballpark, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Conway Medical Center announced the “Teddy Bear Initiative”. This initiative provides officers from the Myrtle Beach Police Department and the Horry County Sheriff’s Department with 500 teddy bears which will be distributed to children in a distressful situation to help provide comfort. The officers will keep the teddy bears in their vehicles and give them to children they encounter while on the job.

“The Pelicans have been a part of the Grand Strand for more than two decades, and giving back to the community in which we live, work, and play is an essential part of our core structure,” stated Pelicans General Manager Kristin Call. “When developing initiatives like the one we’re here to announce today, we look for partners that share those same community values…and we’re thrilled to be working with Conway Medical Center on this project.”

“We’re really excited about this initiative, to partner with the Pelicans on it, as well as the Myrtle Beach Police Department and the Horry County Sheriff’s Department,” said Gene Warren, Conway Medical Center Marketing Director. “Conway Medical Center has an almost 100-year tradition of caring about the people in this community, whether that’s inside our hospitals or in our clinic. For us, programs like this are just one more way for us to help the people of Horry County and especially children.”

“We want to think the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Conway Medical Center for giving us the opportunity to come here today and accept these teddy bears,” said Sgt. Jeff Benton of the Horry County Sheriff’s Department. “Being in law enforcement in the age that we are, we tend to deal with so many situations that children are involved in. A simple little teddy bear could give them the courage to trust us and to know that we’re there for them.”
