CORPUS CHRISTI – The Midland RockHounds dashed the Hooks’ Fourth of July as a Whataburger Field crowd of 6,839 watched as the visitors from the Permian Basin beat Corpus Christi, 8-1, Monday night.
The Hooks, who have been blanked twice in their last four games, managed five hits.
Wilyer Abreu and Jordan Brewer accounted for all but one of those knocks as both players doubled and singled Monday. Brewer scored the lone CC run on a Luke Berryhill sac fly in the third.
Colin Peluse earned the victory for the RockHounds, striking out six without issuing a walk in 6 1/3 innings. Peluse finished his night by retiring 12 of 14.
Misael Tamarez battled through five innings for the Hooks, allowing five hits and three walks.
Tamarez exited with his club trailing by a pair, but Midland mustered an unearned run against Jose Bravo in the sixth before breaking the game open with a four-run ninth. A two-run home run by Brett Harris capped the barrage.
The Hooks and Hounds are off Tuesday and then resume their six-game series Wednesday night. Jimmy Endersby is the probable pitcher for Corpus Christi.
