(Reading, PA) - Philadelphia Phillies' relief pitcher Nick Nelson is scheduled to rehab with the Reading Fightin Phils this week. Nelson will appear when Reading welcomes the Altoona Curve (Pittsburgh Pirates) from Tuesday through Sunday this week.
Nelson is entering his second season with the Phillies after he was traded from the New York Yankees to the Phillies in November of 2021. In 2022, Nelson appeared in 47 games with 45 being out of the bullpen. He collected a 3-2 record with a 4.85 ERA. Nelson recorded over a strikeout per inning, as he picked up 69 punch-out's over 68.2 innings pitched.
Last week, Nelson made two rehab appearances with the Phillies single-A affiliate, Clearwater Threshers. He appeared in two games, on the road at Tampa, and didn't allow an earned run over 4.2 innings pitched. Nelson started both games and allowed three hits, all of which came in his most recent appearance for Clearwater on Apr. 22.
As a big leaguer, Nelson spent the 2020 and '21 seasons with the Yankees. Over those two years, he combined to appear in 22 games over 34.1 innings pitched. 2022, with the Phillies, was the most Nelson pitched in the big leagues in a season. Nelson was drafted by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft, out of Gulf Coast Community College in Florida.
Nelson is not unfamiliar with the Eastern League. Between 2018 and '19, he appeared in 16 games (15 starts) with then Yankees double-A affiliate, the Trenton Thunder. Over those two seasons, he made two starts against the Fightin Phils, with both coming at home in Trenton.
Come see big leaguer Nick Nelson and the Fightin Phils this week at FirstEnergy Stadium. Reading is home from Tuesday Apr. 25 through Sunday Apr. 30 against the Altoona Curve (Pirates).
