PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (June 25, 2019) - Michael Plassmeyer spun seven scoreless innings and Wander Franco reached base three times in his High-A debut as the Charlotte Stone Crabs shut out the Fort Myers Miracle 2-0 at Charlotte Sports Park Tuesday.
Plassmeyer (3-2) held Fort Myers (42-32, 3-5) to just two hits over seven innings, striking out six without walking a batter.
Tuesday marked the High-A debut of baseball's unanimous top prospect Wander Franco. The 18-year-old reached base in three of his four plate appearances and contributed to both of the Stone Crabs' (40-34, 5-3) run-scoring innings.
In a scoreless game in the bottom of the first, Vidal Brujan lined a single into left. The next batter was Franco, who grounded a base hit into left. The ball rolled under the glove of Miracle left fielder Trevor Larnach, allowing Brujan to score and make it 1-0. After Fort Myers starter Jhoan Duran (1-7) walked the next two, he struck out three Stone Crabs in a row to leave the bases loaded.
With Charlotte still up 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Thomas Milone walked before being replaced by Brujan on a fielder's choice. Franco then moved Brujan to second on an infield single before the duo executed a double steal. With Brujan at third, Duran issued a wild pitch, allowing him to come across and make it 2-0.
Chandler Raiden worked the final two innings to notch his fifth save, pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth.
The Stone Crabs will look to claim the series at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Joe Ryan (4-2, 2.00) is scheduled to pitch for Charlotte, against Edwar Colina (3-2, 3.51) of the Miracle. Coverage begins at 9:15 a.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
