Summary
Portland Sea Dogs left-hander Daniel McGrath held the Akron RubberDucks to two runs - one earned - in six innings, and shortstop C.J. Chatham, the Eastern League's leading hitter, hit the deciding double in the sixth inning to give the home team a 3-2 rubber match victory at Hadlock Field on Sunday afternoon.
Turning Point
After Portland took one-run leads in the second and fourth innings that the RubberDucks matched in the third and fifth innings, the game was tied, 2-2, entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Center fielder Jarren Duran led off against left-hander Adam Scott (4-3) and reached on a ground ball to third baseman Nolan Jones . After right fielder Marcus Wilson's flyout, Duran stole second base with Chatham batting. On the eighth pitch of the at bat, Chatham doubled to left-center field, giving the Sea Dogs a 3-2 lead and ending Scott's start after 5 1/3 innings.
Mound Presence
Scott pitched at least five innings for a 10th straight start since joining Akron. In the second inning, he allowed left fielder Luke Tendler's one-out single and stolen base, but his errant pickoff throw to center field scored an unearned run. Wilson's fourth-inning leadoff home run was Portland's only earned run. Scott allowed three runs on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Right-hander Henry Martinez walked a batter before retiring five in a row. Right-hander Dalbert Siri worked around a leadoff triple in a scoreless eighth inning, extending an eight-game, 7 2/3-inning scoreless streak.
Duck Tales
The RubberDucks loaded the bases with three first-inning walks but did not score. In the third inning, right fielder Trenton Brooks hit a two-out double to right-center field, and designated hitter Connor Marabell hit an RBI single to left field for a 1-1 tie. In the fifth inning, shortstop Ernie Clement reached on an error, stole second base and was retired in a rundown when Brooks hit into a fielder's choice and reached second base. Marabell's single to center field then tied the game, 2-2.
