MODESTO, Calif. — The Ports and Nuts got all of their scoring in the fourth inning Thursday night, with Stockton besting Modesto 9-5 in game three of the series.
The rallies and final tallies on the night were incredibly similar for both teams, with each side registering seven hits and two errors, but two home runs for the Ports to cap off their nine-run fourth were the difference for the four-run advantage.
Both sides put two-out rallies together in the fourth for the bulk of their scoring. The Ports worked four straight walks to start the frame to get on the board, the fourth walk coming from Nick Schwartz to put Stockton up 1-0 and extend his on-base streak to 27 games. After strikeouts of Joseph Rodriguez and Angel Arevalo, it seemed like the Ports might be doomed to continuing their pattern of missing out on the big hit and leaving the bases loaded.
However, leadoff man Davis Diaz pulled a double into the left field corner to clear the bases and make it 4-0 Stockton. After Clark Elliott walked, Tommy White drove in Diaz with an RBI single into center to make it 5-0. That was followed by the big blow that proved to be the difference in the game for the Ports, as Rodney Green Jr. laced a three-run home run (2) to the opposite field to extend the lead to 8-0. Cameron Leary would hit a home run to deep right (3) to go back-to-back with Green Jr. and put Stockton ahead 9-0.
Those two home runs seemed like extra breathing room at the time, but they became the difference in the game when Modesto put together a five run rally in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Carson Jones doubled home Luis Suisbel to get Modesto on the board. An error at second was followed by an RBI double for Carter Dorighi for a 9-2 game, before Curtis Washington Jr. walked to load the bases. The symmetry between the two teams’ rallies continued when Nuts leadoff man Charlie Pagliarini hit a bases-clearing double to make it a 9-5 game.
But the similarities would stop their, as Jose Dicochea got Seattle’s No. 13 prospect Tai Peete to pop out to short to end the threat, keeping the Nuts from matching the 12 batters that the Ports sent to the plate in the top of the inning. Brayan Restituyo pitched the final three innings and allowed just one hit and one walk to record his second save with Stockton.
The nine-run inning for the Ports was a season high, topping the eight-run first they put up in Fresno on July 23.
