CHARLESTON, WV (July 27, 2018) - Jesse Medrano's 4-for-4 night headlined a 15-hit offensive outburst for the Power as they claimed a 7-2 win over the Asheville Tourists in the series opener Friday night at Appalachian Power Park, snapping their seven-game losing streak.
West Virginia (14-19, 51-48) took its first lead in the bottom of the second inning. Rodolfo Castro started the inning with a single against Asheville starter Garrett Schilling (4-4). After a Fabricio Macias flyout, Robbie Glendinning and Rafelin Lorenzo each singled to load the bases. Kyle Watson then worked a walk to score Castro and tie the game at one. The next batter, Medrano, drove a base knock to left that plated Glendinning and gave the Power a 2-1 lead.
Medrano added a double and another RBI later in the game to cap his four-hit effort. He was one of three Power batters with three hits in the game (Castro and Glendinning).
Glendinning extended West Virginia's lead in the third, bringing in Castro with a two-out RBI single, his first run-scoring knock as a member of the Power.
West Virginia's offense did not stop there, adding two more runs in the fourth. Medrano got the gears turning with a one-out double. Following a fielder's choice and an error that moved Medrano to third, Lolo Sanchez poked a single to right that sent Medrano home. Sanchez later scored on Castro's RBI single to push the Power's lead to 5-1.
Two more insurances runs iced the game for West Virginia in the home half of the eighth. Lorenzo began the inning with a single and quickly scored on Watson's roped double to left-center. Medrano tallied his final RBI of the night after he brought in Watson with a base hit.
Sergio Cubilete (3-4) worked five innings and allowed two runs while striking out four to secure the victory. Asheville (15-17, 42-59) scored a run in the top of the first on a double steal that saw Bret Boswell swipe home. In the fifth, the Tourists tacked on their only other run on a Ryan Vilade single.
Samuel Reyes was the first out of the pen for West Virginia. He struggled with control and walked the bases loaded with one out, but was able to escape the frame without allowing a run by striking out Austin Bernard and Shael Mendoza.
Those two strikeouts started a streak of 11 straight Asheville batters retired by the Power bullpen to end the game. Beau Sulser tossed two perfect frames in relief of Reyes, fanning four batters, while Matt Seelinger closed it out with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, including two strikeouts.
The Power continues their three-game series against the Asheville Tourists Saturday evening at Appalachian Power Park, with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. RHP Travis MacGregor (1-2. 3.09 ERA) gets the nod for West Virginia, while the Tourists send RHP Frederis Parra (1-1, 4.70 ERA) to the slab. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at www.wvpower.com and via the TuneIn Radio App and MiLB First Pitch App.
