Erie SeaWolves first baseman/third baseman Gabriel Quintana has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of May 22nd-May 28th. The 24-year old hit .333 (7-for-21) with one double, five home runs, nine RBIs, six runs scored, and a 1.095 slugging percentage in five games for the SeaWolves last week. Quintana, who is a native of Azua, Dominican Republic, had at least one hit in four of the five games he played in last week, including kicking off his week by going 4-for-5 with three homers, six RBIs and four runs scored in a 14-13 loss against Harrisburg on May 22nd. It was the first career three home run game for Quintana and the four hits and six RBIs tied his career-high. The 6'3", 215 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in home runs (5), slugging percentage (1.095), and OPS (1.429) last week and tied for the league lead in RBIs (9), extra-base hits (6), and total bases (23). He also ranked among the weekly league leaders in runs scored (6-tied 4th). Gabriel, who is hitting .257 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs in 38 games for the SeaWolves this season, was signed by the Detroit Tigers as a minor league free agent on January 4, 2017. He was originally signed by the San Diego Padres as a non-drafted free agent on November 2, 2009.

Justus Sheffield, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Trenton Thunder, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 22nd-May 28th. The 5'11", 200 lb. hurler started a pair of games for the Thunder last week and had a record of 2-0 with 10 strikeouts and a 0.69 ERA. Sheffield, who is a native of Tullahoma, Tennessee, made his first start of the week last Monday against the visiting Reading Fightin Phils and gave up one run over 6.1 innings to earn the win in Trenton's 6-2 victory. He struck out four batters and walked two while giving up four hits. Justus made his second start on Sunday at Portland and earned the win for Trenton in their 6-2 victory. He struck out six batters and walked one while giving up one unearned run on three hits over 6.2 innings of work. The 21-year old tied for the league lead in wins (2) last week and also ranked among the weekly leaders in innings pitched (13.0-tied 3rd), strikeouts (10-tied 3rd), and ERA (0.69-10th). Justus, who is rated by MLB.com as the sixth best prospect in the Yankee organization, was acquired by the New York Yankees in a trade from Cleveland for Andrew Miller on July 31, 2016. He was originally selected by the Indians with the 31st overall pick of the 2014 draft out of Tullahoma High School in Tennessee.
