North Little Rock, AR-The Arkansas Travelers rallied from four runs down on Friday night but eventually fell to the Tulsa Drillers in 11 innings, 5-4 in front of 7,101 at Dickey-Stephens Park.
Trailing 4-0 in the sixth the Travs got one back in the bottom half when Jay Baum doubled, moved to third on Chuck Taylor's infield hit and then scored on a passed ball. It wasn't until the ninth though that the Travs were able to tie the game.
Facing Corey Copping in the ninth, Kyle Waldrop walked then Marcus Littlewood singled. Ryan Casteel followed with a base hit to cut the deficit to two. Then after Tyler Marlette walked to load the bases Joey Wong's single scored a pair to tie the game. The Travs were unable to end it though as they stranded the winning run at third base in the ninth.
Tulsa would then go back in front in the 11th. The Drillers loaded the bases with no outs on a single from Kyle Garlick, a walk by Jose Miguel Fernandez and Jacob Scavuzzo being hit by a pitch. Two batters later, pinch-runner Tim Locastro scored on a Wynston Sawyer's sac fly to right-center, although Kyle Waldrop's diving catch of the fly ball prevented further damage.
Tulsa built their lead early with a single run in the fifth and then three in the sixth including an Edwin Ríos RBI double and a two-run homer by Garlick. Both starters lasted just five innings with Max Povse allowing one run for the Travs while striking out eight and Josh Sborz pitching shutout ball for the Drillers.
Arkansas' bullpen got 1.2 innings of scoreless relief from Kyle Hunter and two shutout frames from Peter Tago. Zac Curtis (0-1) pitched the 10th and 11th innings and was charged with the loss giving up a run on one hit and a walk. Michael Johnson (2-0) was the winning pitcher for Tulsa going 1.2 innings scoreless and getting the Drillers out of the tight situation in the ninth. Ralston Cash then pitched the 11th earning his first save.
Casteel led the Travelers' offense with a 3-4 night at the plate including a run batted in. He and Taylor both stretched their hitting streaks to eight games while Littlewood pushed his to seven.
The Travs hit the road for four game at Northwest Arkansas starting Saturday night in Springdale. Right-hander Dylan Unsworth (1-1, 4.96) starts for Arkansas against a yet to be announced starter for the Naturals. First pitch is set for 6:35.
