The Ogden Raptors put together a middle-innings rally Monday night in Orem, but it wasn't enough to claim a split in the short two-game series as the Owlz went up early and held on for a 14-9 victory and sweep of the set.
After two runs in the first inning, the hosts busted out in the second by putting each of the first 10 batters on base thanks to five singles, a double, a hit batter and two walks. The second inning ended with Orem leading, 10-0.
After being shut down for three innings by Owlz starter Elvin Rodriguez, Ogden broke through in the fourth. Romer Cuadrado led off with a home run crushed out of the ballpark, his third of the season, and with two away Garrett Hope drove in Nick Yarnall, who had doubled.
Conor Heady, in his second professional game, notched his first hit with a two-bagger to lead off the fifth. That was immediately followed by back-to-back triples from Moises Perez and Michael Medina for a two-run frame.
With two down in the sixth, Tyler Adkison hit a triple. He scored the Raptors' fifth run on a Heady single.
The rally continued to the seventh. Cuadrado hit a leadoff single, and a pair of walks loaded the bases for Hope. The slugger got a pitch in his wheelhouse and launched it over the fence in left-center, becoming the first Raptor with a grand slam in 2017.
That brought Ogden within three, at 12-9. Orem had scored twice in the fourth thanks to four errors committed by the Raptors defense. Ogden ended the night with a season-high six miscues.
There were a few bright spots with the leather for the visitors. In the first, Cuadrado caught a fly in foul territory and gunned down a runner trying to tag from third with a strike on the fly to Hope at the plate. Cuadrado then recorded an out in the second with a leaping grab near the right-field wall. Also, in the bottom of the seventh, Rylan Bannon backhanded a ball down the third base line, pivoted to the bag and then rifled a throw across to first base for a double play.
The Raptors return home for a seven-game homestand starting Tuesday, June 27. All three South division foes will make trips to Lindquist Field, with the Orem Owlz and Grand Junction Rockies visiting for two games apiece before the Idaho Falls Chukars come to town for three.
